Academic Freedom is on the March

Or something like that. Anyone know what the opposite of 'enlightenment' is? If anyone out there wonders why I don't want to see our country become more like the U.S., it's not because I'm anti-American - it's because stuff like this scares me.

  • Whooee! Them thumpers sure know how t' raise a ruckus. I figger they're throwbacks in ol' Chuck Darwin's evolutionary timeline. Yer on the money fer wantin' t' keep 'em from gettin' a toehold here in Canadee. If we jest keep doin' whet we're doin' an' the Merkins keep doin' what they're doin', we'll end up lookin' as smart as the Japanese an' the Yanks'll end as dumb as a box o' crackers.

    As fer yer vocabullary quiz, the opposite of 'enlightenment' is 'benighted'.

  • Well hopefully the bill won't pass, but it seems like a sign of the times down there.

    Alas, that kind of attitude already has a toehold here (if you ask me), but it would be nice to keep it from becoming a foothold.

    Thanks for the response on the vocabulary quiz as well - my only fear is if I start talking about how ignorant some benighted people are, everyone's going to think I'm talking about Conrad Black.

  • bah. at ubc, young conservatives are convinced everyone is a liberal since uni students and profs are HIPPIES who arent going to law school/become investment bankers like they are.

    since conservatism is underepresented and the whole of political ideology isnt nuanced at all and can be neatly partitioned left and right, they believe they get to speak 50% of the time... this doesnt mean other minorities (ie race, orientation, language) get the same right to level the playing field in their favour. that would be affirmative action, doncha know.

    i just want these people to shut up if theyre just going to whine. speak up in class and fight like the rest of us - i STRONGLY doubt any poli sci class out there is devoid of debate due to being comprised of 'liberals' with congruent values. bah.

  • considering that their university system is supposed to be creating a dreadful power elite of left leaning liberal types, who endanger the academic freedom of poor besieged conservatives, isn't it a bit odd that every level of the u.s. federal government is in the hands of the republicans? heaven forbid that the intelligentsia should require students to back up their beliefs with reasoned arguments. how dare those dictatorial professors impose curricula on the weak, helpless right wing students. scarred for life they'll be. imagine, trying to force intellectual rigor in an institute of higher learning. well, thank goodness the republicans are working to get rid of those pesky nuisance lawsuits....er, at least the ones that might hold corporations responsible for faulty, dangerous products and practices.
