Who's Standing Up For Canada?

Scariest Headline of the Year on today's National Post: "Bush to Canada: We Care" (or something like that)

Hands up anyone who thinks Bush wouldn't try to make nice unless he wanted something in return.

Mulroney once talked about being in bed with an elephant, but my concern for the moment is who wins a battle between a lame duck and a sitting duck.

  • It wasn't Mulroney, it was Pierre Trudeau who said that living next to the United States was like sharing a bed with an elephant. All Mulroney did was sing songs with Reagan.

  • Ah, yes: the utterly surreal St. Patrick's Day sing-along... "When Irish Eyes are Smiling", I seem to recall.

I do hope Plastic Man recalls what all of Bush's international allies have recieved for their support over the years...

  • Yes, you (anon) are right (I see, after googling it), Trudeau said it first - but he was before my time - I remember Mulroney saying it (in reference to free trade, a couple of years before signing the free trade agreement).

Lorne Nystrom references Mulroney's comment in Hansard

    More details here

Still, the google evidence is sketchy, I guess Mulroney's comment could be an urban legend, although I remember it pretty clearly.
