When anybody else would refrain...

... they're debating SSM again.

OK, technically, the plan seems to be that parliament will hold a vote on Same-Sex Marraige (SSM) in which they will decide *not* to debate it again. You know, I've heard of the expression 'throwing red-meat to your base' but this seems more like throwing an already gnawed bone to your base. I guess we'll see if they choke on it.

  • This course of action was an explicit campaign promise - you knew this was coming. I'm sure if they didn't follow through someone else would howl with rage.

  • Kevin - I was actually going to end my post with a sarcastic, 'I hope they don't choke on it' but was worried people might think I wanted their base to literally choke. But maybe I was being overly cautious.

Andrew - A campaign promise? Like leaving income trusts alone? Sorry - couldn't resist.

You're right that some people might howl if they didn't do anything. I'm just not sure that this motion asking whether they really want to do anything (if that is indeed what ends up happening) will be any better than doing nothing. I mean, I wouldn't find it very convincing if I was an SSM opponent who supported the Cons on that basis.

I'm hoping it will shut the anti-SSM crowd up for a while, because it's going to be shot down. I'd rather see a minority CPC gov't table this motion than a majority one.... this has a chance to settle things for good.

It provides Harper with a means of saying "we fought the good fight, but lost.... again. It's time to move on."

During the last election campaign I was helping answer emails for the candidate I was supporting. This exact path is what the CPC was promising. So if an anti-SSM voter cast their ballot for the CPC and is now disappointed.... well, that's not the CPC's fault - this was the party policy.
